Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind Franklin was a chemist but mad her most contributions in the field of x-ray crystallography. This lead to the understanding of molecular structures of various substances. DNA was a main part of her research, and she discovered that there is an intertwined double helix of the atoms. She went to Newnham College, Cambridge, and studied chemistry. Still it is controversial about who invented the molecule structure because after her death two males recieved the noble prize for the intertwined double helix of DNA. But died at the age of 37 due to ovarian cancer.

The reason I choose Rosalind Franklin is because of her most successful contributions in the line of X-Ray's and DNA structures and those two fascinate me. Also I thought the controversial after her death for who would get the credit was appealing to me. But her life was interesting and that is why I choose to write about her.

When you think science what scientist comes to mind? What was this person(s) contributions and why do you admire them?

When I think of science in my mind the picture of your face always pops up. The reason i choose you is because I have learned a lot from your lessons and made me a more science developed person. Also you went to Xavier and have done other major contributions.

2 Goals

One of the goals for the remainder of the year is to be more knowledgeable about the elements and compounds that we use in everyday life. And to see if they are positively enhancing our environment or negatively effecting it. For example my broman project was over bromine and even though bromine was meant to clean and do good, it would end up effecting the environment poorly. The second goal for the year is to be able to prepare for test efficiently and effectively. My test grades seemed to lack my quiz grades, so I will give myself more time to prepare for the test.

Time Line Project, E-Portfolio

1.            Why is this exhibit a good choice for placement in your e-portfolio?
While doing the time line, I develeloped a lot of new skill learning how to make projects on excel. Also working with a partner, to both do equal amount of effort and time put in to this project. Last is the new information i learned about all the scientist in this time line and their significances.
2.      What did you find most interesting about this exhibit activity and why?
What I found most interesting about the Time Line Project, is that it was very time consuming and difficult. I expected from the beginning that it would be an easy project, but I was definitely proven wrong. But it was still fun.;)
3.      In what way(s) did you find this exhibit a challenge to complete?
There were two challenges to complete the Time Line which were partners, and gathering information. Partners were difficult because you both have different ideas, and the information was hard because some websites had faulty info.
4.      If you were to do this activity again what changes would you make and why?
If i was to do the Time Line again I would make my ideas and format more creative. If i was more creative then it would have been better organized and funner for the viewer to see.
5.      What change(s) in attitude or behavior helped you to meet the challenge?
My attitude had to change to be more willing to work in a pair rather that solo. My behavior habits changed also, because when we were completing the project it was hard to rotate every other on because you get distracted. So we each did half separately then came back together and completed it.
6.      What grade would you give yourself for these reflections, from “1” to “4”, where “4” is the best? (Refer to the E-Portfolio Reflection Rubric.)Give specific evidence explaining why you gave yourself that grade
I believe that I would give myself a three four these reflections. The reason I choose this grade is because I gave my self one day to complete this. So maybe my answers were not thoroughly planned, and answered. That is why I gave myself a 3.

If you were an element what would it be like?

If I was an element my name would be Cue, and my symbol would be Qo. It is a metal element and its reactivity with other elements is very jubilant. It is pending for activity at all time due to its low valence electrons in the outer most energy shell. When it reacts with some other elements it creates a new source of energy, and due to the increase of this elements exsistence it can replace the use of normal electricity (stop rolling blackouts). It can also be used in new electronic weapons like to power lasers and create EMP's at any moment when it reacts with bombic, and uranium. It is a black-silverish shiny color and is very essential for the future of science, and the world.

What am I learning about myself as a student in chemistry?

Chemistry is one of the most important fields of science and I am learning that it is also the most fun. Chemistry is also important later on in life if I wanted to pursue the field of Medical Science or Chemical Engineering. The aspect is very easy to understand (also because of how we are taught), and is very enjoyable to partake in class. I am also learning that I enjoy sciences over all of my other academics because of the experiments and the structure of the labs.
